Believe it or not, spring is around the corner. And with it comes an increase in the use of tanning salons by teenagers. A recent Federal investigation showed that many of these facilities are providing false and misleading information to teenagers about the health risks posed by indoor tanning.
There are several things parents and teens should know:
- The risk of melanoma increases by 75% for patients using tanning beds before age 30.
- One national survey reported that 24% of non-Hispanic white teens reported using a tanning salon at least once.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics, The American Medical Association, The World Health Organization, and the American Academy of Dermatology all support prohibiting the use of indoor tanning beds before the age of 18 years.
